The application of simulators is an important part of endoscopic training. Virtual trainers (simulators) build the bridge between theoretical knowledge and the accumulation of operative experience for both trainee doctors as well as experienced surgeons.
The Kiel School has gained experience with the development and application of virtual trainers over many years. In our Virtual Lab we use the LTS2000, the LTS3e and, during our training courses, the Lap Mentor:

LTS2000

LTS2000The LTS2000 (Laparoscopic Training Simulator) enables physicians to practice and perfect the skills required for performing safe and efficient laparoscopic surgery in a cost-effective environment. The unique design of the simulated abdominal wall, adjustable floor mat, and interchangeable models allow hands-on laparoscopic manipulations to be conducted under realistic physical conditions.

LTS3e

LTS 3e The LTS3e is a self-contained simulator for structured testing and training of skills used in laparoscopic surgery. The enclosure contains a built-in PC, fold-out video display, electronic testing carousel, digital video camera, illuminator, DVD, and a wireless keyboard. All the wires are concealed and permanently attached. All components operate universally from 110-240 volts. The unit folds upon itself for maximum use of space and easy portability. This interactive laparoscopic training simulator combines the best of physical and virtual simulation into a plug 'n' play solution. It combines validated physical reality exercises with computerized assessment. Electronic sensors and digital video capture user performance with a PC interface.
The following videos show the different skill exercises (Tasks 1 to 10):

Lap Mentor

Arbeit am Lap Mentor

The LAP Mentor™ multi-disciplinary LAP surgery simulator enables simultaneous hands-on practice for a single trainee or a team. The system offers training opportunities to new and experienced surgeons for everything from perfecting basic laparoscopic skills to performing complete laparoscopic surgical procedures.

The new 2nd generation LAP Mentor II Simulator features an advanced, ergonomic design that is both portable and user-friendly. The simulator handles on this sleek system are completely extractable for easy switching to suturing handles.

In addition, the improved haptic interface on the new LAP Mentor II offers enhanced tactile feedback, performance and reliability.

VirtaMed HystSim

VirtaMed HystSim provides the entire curriculum for diagnostic aswell as therapeutic hysteroscopy and is not limited to basic skills training. For best learning success, the training provides not only the practical part with skilled training on complete virtual interventions equipped with feedback reports but also practical teaching tutorials by each training module.

Diagnostische HSK Polypektomie Myomektomie Endometriumablation
The main object is to establish and maintain clear view and to visualize the entire cavity with safe use of the angled optics and correct fluid handling.
Automatic feedback includes the intervention time, fluid consumption and an overview of the visualized uterine surface.
Training for the removal of pathologies is provided to practice an essential part of therapeutic hysteroscopy.

Scenes with small polyps offer a good opportunity to gain first experience  with the cutting loop.

Different virtual patients with one or many submucosal fibroids are provided for the safe teaching of hysteroscopic myomectomy with the loop electrode.

Feedback includes a safety score and the percentage of myoma resected.

Endometrium ablation with the rollerball is an excellent exercise for the handling of electro surgery in the entire cavity.

At the end of the intervention, precise feedback about the coagulated surface is provided.
