Positive Balance 2010-2011

Dear Friends of the Kiel School,

Our best wishes for a prosperous and successful 2011.

Last year was a very successful year for the KIEL SCHOOL.  We conducted 10 training courses with 112 participants from 17 different countries.

Two new colleagues also joined our team in 2010.  Dr. Ibrahim Alkatout has become a chief support in the clinical organisation of the courses and in the teaching field.  He has been able to draw upon the knowledge and experience gained in the Department of General Surgery and the Institute of Pathology.

Our latest addition to the team, Mohamed Elessawy, MD, joined us in October 2010.   He has brought in new ideas acquired from his teaching experience at the ALEXEA in Alexandria.

The infrastructure of the KIEL SCHOOL also underwent a modernization last year.  Thanks to the generous support of the Karl Storz company, we now have one of the most advanced laparoscopy work stations.  The modern endoscopic mobile cart (SMARTCART) is equipped with the latest technological advances in power and light sources.  The full HD camera system guarantees the best possible image quality on a 26” screen.

These HD pictures can also be transmitted for teaching purposes to our new 40” flat screen, which is otherwise used for live surgery transmission or the showing of teaching DVDs.

We have completely reorganized the room “Virtual Lab”.  In addition to the virtual trainer workstations, we have now installed an interactive Whiteboard (or SMARTBOARD), which combines the advantages of modern projection and presentation technology and allows interactive powerpoint presentations, live surgical transmissions, online research and much more. The SMARTBOARD has brought a whole new level of interactivity to the training centre.

Communication has become easier for our course participants, guests and students as we have our own access point for different networks.  Course participants are able to log in to the internet and students can log in to the notebook network of the Christian Albrechts University.
