2011 Indo-German Training Course
The 21st Indo-German Training Course in Gynaecological Endoscopic Surgery took place in the Kiel School from the 15th – 26th May. A new record was set with 30 participants. Thanks to the support of the Karl Storz company, we were able to transmit live surgery from the new operating theatre direct to the rooms of the Kiel School.
The week began with introductory lectures. One of the first highlights was the lecture on the anatomy of the female pelvis, given by Prof. Thilo Wedel in the Kiel Institute of Anatomy.
The afternoons were dedicated to individual training at the hystero- and pelvitrainers. The participants were able to learn and practise laparoscopic skills in practical training sessions on models and animal organs. Special focus was placed on instrument handling, in particular ease of handling with the 30° optic. Again, we could offer all participants the chance to practise their skills on the VirtaMed HystSim, an advanced virtual reality hysteroscopy simulator and excellent teaching tool. The new skills could then be put into practise on pigs’ hearts.
On Saturday a lecture symposium was held with world-renowned laparoscopists. During the lectures particular emphasis was placed on safety and the avoidance of complications. After the lecture series, the participants completed an exam questionnaire to assess the knowledge they had gained during the week’s training programme.
Saturday evening the farewell dinner was held in the Hotel Maritim overlooking the Kiel Bay. On Sunday the guests had the option to either visit Berlin or sail on the Kiel Bay.
We would like to thank all organizers and staff members who helped make this course such a success. In particular we would like to thank the Karl Storz company for their generous support in providing extra personnel for the course, for equipping our training centre and for their ready assistance to help with the live transmission from the new operating theatre to the Kiel School. Our thanks also go to VirtaMed, Ethicon, Covidien, Nordic Pharma and BOWA without whose support we would not have been able to implement such a training course.
